Dear Residence Hall Students,
We are emailing today with some information about Fire Safety. Fire Safety room inspections will take place between September 22 - September 28, 2025. Please read below to learn more about inspections.
Fire Safety Inspections Between September 22 - September 28, University Housing’s Resident Assistants (RAs) will complete Fire Safety Room Inspections. Fire Safety Room Inspections are intended to help promote safety and fire prevention awareness in the halls.
At least 24 hours beforehand, your RA will let you know the dates and times between September 22-28 when they plan to complete Fire Safety Room Inspections on your floor. Your RA and another RA from your community will complete the inspection. If you are home during the inspection, please resolve any fire safety concerns that the RAs bring to your attention. If you are not home during your inspection, a physical form will be left in your room letting you know if any violations were found, and those violations must be fixed before re-inspections occur.
If there were any violations found during the initial inspections, our staff will come back to your room between October 6 – October 12, 2025, to make sure the item is removed/fixed. Failure to fix this violation before re-inspections on October 6th may result in referral to conduct.
Fire safety violations that we frequently see and ask to be corrected are listed below: - Candles/Incense (even if they are not lit)
- Non-UL approved extension cords/power strips
- Doors covered with decorations or combustible materials
- Items hung from ceiling
- Hanging curtains or sheets from lofted beds
- Flags, posters or other decorations in windows-no decorations shall interfere with visibility or egress in windows
- Furniture blocking window-furniture blocks egress in case of need of evacuation
- Furniture or other property within 2 feet of room’s HVAC input/output vents-this can interfere with air circulation
Residents are expected to fix these violations as well as any other violations that are listed in the . RAs will only look for fire safety concerns that are in plain view. If you have any questions about this process, please check with your RA, Assistant Residence Hall Director, or Residence Hall Director.
Do You Have A Prohibited Item? Are you reviewing our policies and see something on our prohibited item list that you currently have in your room? We encourage you to remove the item from your room and to not bring it back to campus. Fall Break will be October 2 – October 5, and students are encouraged to remove these items during this Break.
Are you not able to remove the prohibited item yet? Perhaps you live far away and can’t quite take it home yet- we get it! If this is the case, we invite you to visit Safety and Community Care in Tri Towers Rotunda room 105 between the hours of 12pm-4am any day of the week. Safety and Community Care will be able to store most items for you, until you’re able to go home next. Items will be stored through the fall semester, and Safety and Community Care will talk you through this timeline when you bring the item. Some items that are an immediate fire concern will not be able to be stored by Safety and Community Care (grills, gasoline, etc.) but most will be able to be stored temporarily.
