Electric scooters have become increasingly popular on ΜμΜμ³ΤΉΟβs ΜμΜμ³ΤΉΟ Campus since the introduction of SPIN scooters in March 2022. Approximately 300 eScooters and 150 eBikes are available to rent. With that in mind, the ΜμΜμ³ΤΉΟ State Community should be aware of the dos and donβts when operating the scooters.
βWe want people to educate themselves and be as informed as possible before jumping on one of these devices,β said Christopher Lukas, assistant director of outdoor operations and adventure for ΜμΜμ³ΤΉΟ Recreational Services. βBecause if not, the scooters can be dangerous.β
Lukas recommends using the SPIN website or app to be informed about safety tips and procedures. The site has a wealth of information.
βThereβs five safety videos and a safety quiz,β Lukas said. βIf users answer all the questions on the safety quiz correctly they get $5 of SPIN credit and an opportunity to order a free helmet.β
Some of the general safety tips on SPINβs website include:
-
obeying all traffic laws.
-
never blocking pedestrian walkways.
-
being mindful of others who may have difficulties with vision or mobility.
-
driving slow near pedestrians.
-
Users should never operate a SPIN scooter under the influence. Doing so could result in a serious injury and even a DWI.
SPIN also has safety procedures to protect first-time riders.
βThe devices are set at a slower speed when people ride them for the first time,β Lukas said. βSo they canβt go that maximum 15 miles an hour until they get used to it.β
The SPIN site also information on pricing, additional safety tips, a map of operating areas, estimated ride times and hints on how to ride.
For instance, SPIN provides some guidance for those unfamiliar with riding electric scooters, such as:
-
relax your body to absorb bumps in the road.
-
ride over bumps head on.
-
always look ahead and not at the wheels.
-
shift your weight to your back foot when braking and forward when accelerating.
