Kelly Washbourne (MA, Translation, Middlebury Institute of International Studies; PhD, Hispanic Literature and Linguistics, University of Massachusetts Amherst) is professor of Spanish and Interpreting. He is a recipient of both National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities translation awards, and his translation of Autoepitaph, the poetry of Reinaldo Arenas, was longlisted for the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. His latest book-length translation is the first full English translation of all three volumes of the seventeenth-century Spanish philosophical masterpiece, El Criticón (1651-57), by Baltasar Gracián. He is Associate Editor at Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice, a leading journal in the field, and former editor of Routledge UK’s Translation Practices Explained series. Dr. Washbourne currently has studies underway on cosmopolitan competence (with Alberto Morán-Vallejo) and others in critical pedagogy and linguistic rights, and he was a Guest Editor for the special issue of Mutatis Mutandis (Medellín, Colombia) on translation and activist commitment (2025). He is planning a co-authored book with Israel Noletto in 2027 on the history and strategy of translating invented (constructed) languages, or ‘conlangs’, in fiction. A longtime collaborator with community partners in Northeast Ohio, he has served programs in migrant health, community-building, Latin@ children’s educational enhancement, and bilingual literacy. His community-oriented initiatives have included service missions to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, and he has lived, worked, or studied in Spain, the Basque Country, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. His latest phase of research focuses on such topics as contemplative pedagogy, translator self-positioning in sacred texts of the Dharmic traditions, the Sephardic Kabbalah and other mystical teachings, intersemiotics in The Conference of the Birds, the Theosophists as translators, and inter-epistemic translations of The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali. He is on sabbatical in spring 2027 and will be retiring soon.
