Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Perform language tasks in German at the intermediate-low level or above as described by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Proficiency, in ACTFL terms, is understood to describe a range of qualities rather than an absolute norm and will vary according to task type, language function, topic, skill (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and so forth.
  2. Explain various facets of contemporary German-speaking cultures in English and German.
  3. Analyze aspects of the linguistic, ethnic, racial, religious, cultural and social diversity within German-speaking countries and communities in English and German.
  4. Explain the historical and political context of German-speaking cultures.
  5. Connect other discipline-based fields in the context of the German language and cultures.

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

French - Minor

The French minor gives students a sufficient command of the language, both written and spoken. Students gain knowledge of French literature and culture, are able to travel in France as more than just an interested tourist and have a foundation from which to pursue their interest in French independently for personal enrichment and professional advancement.

  2. Write in French about a variety of situations and for multiple purposes.
  3. Read and comprehend various text types such as newspaper articles, short stories and web content with the aid of dictionaries and other resources.
  4. Exhibit a fundamental understanding of francophone culture.

Students with prior knowledge of French may be able to fulfill one or more of the prerequisite courses through an  option. Students may also fulfill one or more of the prerequisite courses by starting in a higher level course than FR 13201 and applying for a proficiency waiver as outlined in the policy.

Chinese - Minor

The Chinese minor provides a variety of courses to develop not only the traditional skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, but also international cultural competence and critical thinking skills. By imitating natural mother-tongue language learning processes and employing student-centered classroom techniques, this minor provides students practice in using Chinese in real-life contexts and equips students to speak about their own and other cultures.
