The Poetry Coalition, of which the Wick Poetry Center at ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï is a founding member, will benefit from a $200,000 grant from the Ford Foundation. To be given over two years, the grant, which will be administered by the Academy of American Poets, will enable the founding members of the coalition to produce national programs on themes of social importance that feature leading contemporary poets. It also will strengthen a network of poetry organizations by making possible two annual meetings of the founding members during the grant term.

Scientists at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands and ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï in Ohio have developed a new material that can undulate and therefore propel itself forward under the influence of light. To achieve this, the scientists clamp a strip of this polymer material in a rectangular frame. When illuminated, it goes for a walk all on its own. This small device, the size of a paperclip, is the world’s first machine to convert light directly into walking, simply using one fixed light source.

A pair of ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï female pilots have successfully completed the . The Flying Flashes finished fifth out of the 12 universities, and 15th out of the 47 teams overall. They also received a prize for finishing second on the seventh leg of the race and were one of only nine teams to complete the race with zero penalties.

For Fashion Merchandising, the school has been rated #3 Nationally (top 2 percent of schools considered), #3 Nationally among public schools and colleges (top 4 percent of schools considered), and #1 in the Midwest.

Instead of heading home to relax following the conclusion of finals week, a group of ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï student-athletes traveled to Aguacate, Belize, to partner with on a service project from May 16-24.
A total of 19 student-athletes volunteered to make the trip and were accompanied by five staff members as they aided community members in the construction of a multipurpose sports court located next to the local school.

The Burr Magazine, ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State’s general interest student magazine, was named the best student magazine in the nation by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State also earned national finalist status in two categories in SPJ’s annual national Mark of Excellence Awards competition.
In each category, SPJ chooses one winner and up to two national finalists from student journalists’ submissions from across the United States.
